OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POST
Under the responsibility of the Director of Knowledge Societies Division, Communication and Information Sector, Chief of the Universal Access and Preservation, and programme specialist, the Contractor will provide support in the implementation of the UNESCO’s Major Programme V Communication and Information, Main Line of Action 2: Building Knowledge Societies through ICTs, by enabling universal access to, and preservation of, information and knowledge, on the access to information for marginalized social groups, including a follow up to the International Year of Indigenous Languages and the upcoming International Decade of Indigenous Languages.

More specifically, the Individual Specialist will provide secretariat support including:
a. Assistance in planning and implementing UNESCO programme activities with special focus on the follow up to the 2019 International Year of Indigenous Languages:
i. Organization of the events related to the follow up to the International Year of Indigenous Languages (High-level event, Permanent Forum and Expert Mechanism);
ii. Organization of the International Days related to the subject area (21 February and 9 August 2020);
b. Assistance with the preparation of the research reports, including maintenance of communication with content providers, and assistance on background research, photo research, fact checking, web search, as well as other tasks as required, working closely with the editorial team:
i. Preparation of the World Report on Languages;
ii. Preparation of the full text Report on Research Outcomes of the International Year of Indigenous Languages.
c. Provide general office assistance, receive, register, review and draft correspondence and documents, maintain mailing lists and other contact lists, respond to queries about the UNESCO’s work in the above mentioned areas, preparation of meeting notes and other documentation related to the upcoming events.
d. Follow up on the emails and other external and internal enquires using the existing online platforms.
e. Assistance with the maintenance of the dedicated websites, including regular updates management of requests, emails, preparation of announcements and correspondence with partners, research, communication and other;
f. Assistance with production of various communication and information materials, announcements, news items and other resources based on the data provided by UNESCO for dissemination, presentation and other purposes; drafting relevant information materials, including the World Report of Languages and International Days.
g. Assistance with logistic and administrative tasks related to the preparation of the materials, organization of events, and other.
h. Follow up on the emails and other external and internal enquires.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education
• Advanced university degree (Master or equivalent) in linguistic diversity, heritage studies or social anthropology.

Experience
• Minimum two years of relevant professional experience in the field of social and human sciences, communication and information, with preference in linguistic diversity and heritage studies, of which preferably 1 year at working with research community, linguistic minorities networking and similar projects related to the promotion of linguistic diversity, international days and other relevant indigenous issues.

Language skills
• Excellent knowledge (written and oral) of English;
• Good knowledge of French desired

Competencies and skills
• Good project management skills, networking skills; good written and oral communication skills, good IT and information and knowledge management skills.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships in multicultural environment with external and internal partners;

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
• Experience with UNESCO, including linguistic diversity related work, and/or the United Nations system and understanding of their functioning and procedures would be an asset.

• Amount to be charged for the assignment should be quoted on a monthly basis (a full time working in Paris) with a maximum amount of 2.600 EUR.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON WORK CONDITIONS:
• No travel to the duty station is supported.
• Report to work: 10 February 2020 – 10 December 2020.
